Their story starts in Dunedin in 2006 when the two cash-strapped students saw an opportunity and created Otago University-branded hoodies. They borrowed the money to finance their first run of 400 hoodies, which sold out in just a few days.

The company has come a long way from hoodies and now offers a vast range of printed and embroidered apparel, plus promotional products of all shapes and sizes. There’s everything from workwear, uniforms and sports kits to branded pens, glasses, gazebos, and much more.

For founders Tom Wolfenden and Chris Ashton, the anniversary is more than a date on the calendar. It reflects two decades of backing local, adapting to change, and putting customer service at the centre of every decision.

That focus has paid off.
With more than 400 five-star Google reviews, two finalist placings for Excellence in Customer Service Delivery at the Auckland Business Awards, and multiple Gold Awards at the NZ Print Awards, Konstruct has built a reputation that stretches well beyond branded tees and hoodies.

But the team isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Making life easier for schools and families
One of the most exciting developments this year is Konstruct’s partnership with Pomaria School. The company is now the sole supplier of the school’s uniforms, available online or through Konstruct’s newly opened on-site showroom just up the road.

For families, the difference is immediate. Parents can try on sizes locally and order with ease. For the school, the operational relief has been significant as Arnie Welch from Pomaria School explains:
‘Previously, we ordered uniforms in bulk and had them fitted at school. Dealing with uniforms took up a significant amount of our time. We had to hold a lot of stock at school, manage the influx of parents, and handle cash.’

Under the new partnership, Konstruct manages supply, stock, and sales directly. Arnie says that the school’s admin staff have gained valuable time back, and parents are super happy with the seamless process.

The partnership also reflects Konstruct’s deep roots in the community. Tom’s daughter attended Pomaria, and both founders are parents themselves. Supporting local schools and making life easier for family aligns naturally with the business’s values.

Discussions are already underway with other West Auckland schools to offer a similar service.

Built on community and consistency
Looking back, the journey from selling Otago Uni-branded hoodies as students to running a respected West Auckland business feels significant. But for Tom and Chris, the formula remains simple and is something other businesses can take on board:
– Stay connected to the community.
– Listen carefully to customers.
– Deliver what you promise.

As they prepare to mark their 20th anniversary with suppliers and customers later this year, including a special open evening, the focus isn’t just on celebration. It’s also on continuing to grow alongside the businesses and families they serve.

Two decades in, Konstruct’s success story shows what’s possible when local loyalty, adaptability, and genuine service come together.
