COLLABORATION Over Competition: How Women Are Redefining Business Success Together

There’s a quiet revolution happening in the way women do business — and ConnectHer is holding space for this to unfold right here in West Auckland. You can feel it in the rooms where women gather, in the conversations that spark opportunity, and in the way hands reach out to lift and support, as opposed to compete and compare. It’s a really noticeable shift which supports the notion that women in business aren’t competing – they’re collaborating.
Old ways of approaching business never truly fit us. It never reflected the way women naturally connect, support, and build. And it certainly didn’t reflect the reality of juggling
ambition with parenting, caregiving, community, and the invisible load we know all too well.

Why collaboration matters more than ever

Business is constantly changing. Customers want authenticity. Teams want empathy. Communities want connection. And women, especially, want to build and create in their business while feeling aligned with who they are, and certainly no longer stand for being told what to be.

Collaboration allows us to do that.

It gives us access to shared knowledge, shared networks, shared opportunities. It lets us grow with more connection, more learning and less burnout. It creates space for creativity, innovation, and courage to execute. Women ‘get’ each other. And perhaps most importantly, it reminds us that we don’t have to do any of this alone.

For women in business today, connection is not a luxury — it’s a lifeline. When women collaborate, they don’t just build stronger businesses; they build stronger selves and stronger communities.

Connection over Competition

The reality is, most women aren’t energised by competition. We’re energised by connection and thrive when we feel supported.

Through the ConnectHer initiative, that’s exactly what’s happening. Women are choosing collaboration not because it’s ‘on trend’, but because it works. It just feels better. It leads to better outcomes. And it creates a business ecosystem where everyone has room to succeed.

Collaboration isn’t just about formal partnerships or contracts. It’s often much simpler — and much more human.

  • Women recommending each other’s businesses without hesitation
  • Business owners offering their space, skills, or platforms to lift someone else.
  • Having a network to ask for help or insight instead of pretending she has it all figured out.
  • A group of women jumping on a Zoom for a brainstorming session to help someone through a challenge or rough space.
  • A business owner offering her invitation to a workshop to someone who may find it of greater benefit.

These moments might seem small – but they’re not. They create momentum. They build confidence and open doors that competition would keep closed.

The ConnectHer Effect

At ConnectHer After 5 events,  we see collaboration in action every other month. Women share resources, contacts, and opportunities with a generosity that is a true joy to witness. it’s the kind of energy that women are increasingly demanding — not just in networking spaces, but in workplaces and from their organisation’s leadership.

Women Who Collaborate:

  • Grow faster
  • Innovate more
  • Experience less burnout
  • Build stronger networks
  • Create more sustainable businesses
  • Develop deeper resilience

Resilience is part of the currency of long‑term success. Collaboration strengthens resilience because it gives women access to support, perspective, and shared strength.

How to Collaborate Well:

  1. Lead with generosity. Give without keeping score. The return always comes.
  2. Share your knowledge. What you’ve learned can lessen someone else’s struggle.
  3. Ask for help. It’s not weakness; it’s wisdom.
  4. Celebrate other women loudly. Visibility is contagious.
  5. Build relationships before you need them. Collaboration grows from trust, not urgency.
  6. Stay open to unexpected partnerships. Your best collaborator may be outside your industry entirely.

If there’s one thing that’s become clear through the ConnectHer initiative –  the power of Collective Impact.
