CHAIRS REPORT

Winter Edition 2026

Welcome to yet another edition of WEst. It was not that many weeks ago that we were faced with the reality of increased uncertainty of petrol and diesel fuels supplies due to the unrest in the middle east and the restrictions that this was placing on the vital shipping of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

Whilst we have all felt the impact of increased diesel and petrol prices at the pump, and in turn many businesses have had to implement temporary additional fuel surcharges, the way the overall “crisis” has been managed has been first rate, through the removal of unnecessary panic. But more over it is a testament to the adaptability
that is ever present in New Zealand with businesses pausing to evaluate situation, making the necessary price corrections and then just getting on with business. It really  does underscore what a resilient bunch, the business  community is. Of course, we all hope for peace to be restored so that there can be a settling and return to the gradual recovery of the domestic economy that we had been witnessing in more recent times. As a further takeaway from events in the Middle East, for anyone who was not aware of the geographical existence of the Strait of Hormuz, there will be no forgetting it now!

I thoroughly enjoyed attending the most recent BA5 sponsored by  Matrix Security and generously hosted by Thermosash at their state-of-the-art premises in Central Park Drive. For many members the valuable monitoring and additional security that Matrix Security provide to us through their regular patrol activity probably may go unnoticed.

However for the Business West Business Association; this is another vital service that together with the CCTV camera network, ensures we can further increase the security for our member businesses together with the wider community.
We are still committed to progressing with the second phase of the CCTV camera roll out, and continued efforts are being made to appeal to Auckland Council and AT to set aside the unnecessary bureaucracy that is strangling forward progress.

For now I wish you all the best in business and health.
